Power lifter, animal advocate, social media strategist, and 100% vegan only begins to describe John Oberg.

Known in many circles as an outspoken, yet rational, animal advocate, John is on a mission to raise awareness about compassion to animals. As an animal activist and social media influencer and professional, John has dedicated his life to making the world a kinder place for animals by utilizing the power of social media.

Vegan for over 11 years, John has no intention of letting up on his activism. In 2019, he launched his own independent, patron-funded project for animals through Patreon to maximize his impact for animals.

Previously, he served as Director of New Media for the international animal protection organization, The Humane League and as Director of Communications for Vegan Outreach. In 2019, he had tens of millions of views of his content on social media.

Growing up as an animal lover, John’s greatest influence was, and continues to be, his mother. She instilled compassion for animals from a young age.

“She taught me that animals are vulnerable and deserve our protection and consideration.”

John’s motivation is to raise awareness about the hidden abuses to animals in what he describes as “behind closed doors” environments. He believes that when you see an injustice, be willing to speak out.

Additionally, he is a voice for the impact animal consumption has on pandemics. Not one to shy away from his beliefs, John can often be seen wearing a mask that reads, “Eating Animals Causes Pandemics.”

Anyone who follows John on social media knows he does more than talk about what should be done. He is definitely a voice for the voiceless.

His turning point to becoming vegan was when he connected his actions with his intentions. Realizing he could not be a true advocate as long as he consumed any type of animal product, it was in October, 2009 he committed to a 100% vegan lifestyle.

Although he will say he is not a health expert, John’s love of power lifting shows that one does not need to consume any animal products to live a healthy lifestyle and build muscle.

“How can you tell someone is a vegan power lifter? They dead-lift 540 pounds and wear a vegan belt,” John laughs.

John is not out to change anyone, but rather, to raise awareness and open people’s eyes with the information he continually posts on social media. He believes it’s the little actions from those of us committed to being compassionate to animals that make a world of difference.

One of the greatest influences on John making the shift to veganism was a friend who invited him to consider the misalignment of saying he loves animals yet eats them. The other was when he watched the documentary, Earthlings.

Often referred to as “The Vegan Maker” the film impacted him beyond anything he could have anticipated.

“After watching the film, I was absolutely heartbroken. I had no idea what was happening to animals. It was this film that made me decide, right there and then, to never consume animal products ever again.

John is able to continue the advocacy work he does through a community of individuals who make monthly contributions to his Patreon campaign.  http://www.patreon.com/johnoberg
