“These animals, we don’t give them a life. We torture them. I don’t want to be a part of this anymore.”

That powerful realization was the turning point for Cheryl Moss, a longtime vegan, children’s author, and passionate animal advocate. In a moving interview on the Plant Based Eating for Health podcast, hosted by Kathleen Gage, Cheryl opened up about her transformative journey—from a typical consumer to a woman whose life’s mission is to protect the voiceless.

A Love Story with a Rescue Dog That Changed Everything

Cheryl credits much of her awakening to Ruby, the dog she adopted and adored for 18 years. Before Ruby, she hadn’t experienced the deep emotional connection that can exist between a human and an animal. “She opened my heart,” Cheryl shared. “And once it was open, I started seeing all the other animals differently.”

That heart-opening led to a full-on lifestyle shift—Cheryl stopped eating and wearing animals that very day. She also began scrutinizing everything she used, from makeup to household items, aligning every aspect of her life with her values.

A New Voice for Animals: Better Life for Animals Podcast

Knowing she had to do more, Cheryl launched the Better Life for Animals podcast—a show dedicated to telling the stories of sanctuaries, advocates, and the animals they rescue.

“I wake up every day asking, ‘What can I do for the animals?’” Cheryl explained. The podcast was her answer to that question. With guests like John Oberg, Linda Middlesworth, and Dr. Sailesh Rao, the show shines a much-needed light on the unsung heroes behind the scenes—those working tirelessly to heal and care for animals rescued from cruelty.

Educating Young Hearts Through Storytelling

Cheryl’s advocacy also extends to children through her beautifully illustrated books—Gabriel, Cluck, and Pickle the Pig. Each story introduces young readers to the emotional lives of farmed animals and the importance of compassion.

Written in response to the disturbing waste of dairy during the pandemic, Gabriel highlights the realities of the dairy industry. Cluck shares the story of a bird born into sanctuary safety while confronting the fate of others nearby. Pickle the Pig, inspired by stories from real-life sanctuaries, follows a piglet who escapes a hurricane to find freedom.

All net proceeds from the books go directly to Mercy For Animals, with Cheryl aiming to raise $100,000 to support underrepresented sanctuaries.

Shining a Spotlight on Sanctuaries—and Their Struggles

A key focus of the Better Life for Animals podcast is raising awareness about the challenges sanctuaries face, especially financial ones.

“These are places where animals finally get to experience love,” Cheryl said. “But it takes money—fencing, food, vet bills, staffing. These heroes are always doing fundraisers just to stay afloat.”

Sanctuaries have found creative ways to raise funds—from selling fence posts with donors’ names to spotlighting individual animals in need of care. Cheryl believes these personal stories help people connect and give. “When people realize Henry the chicken rings a bell every morning or George the donkey loves head scratches, it changes how they see farmed animals.”

A Message of Hope and Urgency

Cheryl’s message is clear: you don’t have to wait to make a difference. You can start today. Share information. Volunteer at a sanctuary. Most importantly—stop eating animals.

“We’ve been lied to,” Cheryl said. “But we can choose compassion. We can change the story.”
