Most people are told their health is complicated. Dr. Frank Sabatino says it is powerful, not complicated. The choices on your plate, how you move your body, how you handle stress, and what you believe about yourself can either keep you sick or open the door to healing and vitality.
In this episode of the Plant Based Eating for Health podcast, I talk with my long time friend and colleague Dr. Frank Sabatino, a pioneer of plant exclusive living for nearly fifty years. We cover everything from growing up in an Italian household in the 1950s to running fasting centers, researching aging, writing a landmark book, and exploring the deeper meaning of what we put on our plates.
If you have wondered whether a whole food, plant exclusive lifestyle can change your health, this conversation is for you.
From Sick Kid To Plant Exclusive Pioneer
Dr. Frank grew up in a traditional Italian household where meals were loaded with meat, eggs, and dairy. As a child he struggled with intestinal issues and saw top specialists who never connected his symptoms to what he was eating.
Everything changed in college when he met the father of a friend who studied early natural hygiene principles. That conversation opened Dr. Frank’s eyes to plant centered eating. Within weeks his long standing bowel issues disappeared. After twenty years of suffering, the answer arrived through plants, rest, and a new understanding of the body.
He went on to earn his chiropractic degree, study with early fasting pioneers, lead natural hygiene centers, complete a PhD in cell biology and neuroendocrinology, teach at the University of Texas, and run the Regency Health Spa for twenty five years. Today he continues his work through oceanfront retreats in Florida and private consultations.
The Three Love Affairs Of Plant Exclusive Eating
Dr. Frank teaches that a plant exclusive lifestyle supports three essential love affairs. Personal health. Compassion for animals. The health of the planet.
Every time you choose whole plant foods you reduce inflammation, protect animals, and ease the stress placed on land and water resources. In Dr. Frank’s view, this is not simply personal preference. It is a responsibility to yourself and to the world you live in.
Why Weight, Disease, And Inflammation Are Connected
Dr. Frank is direct yet compassionate. Being overweight or over fat is not a moral failing, but it is a biological risk. Almost all chronic disease is driven by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress.
Inflammation is helpful when the body needs to repair something, but harmful when it never switches off. Processed foods, animal products, toxins, stress, and excess fat keep the body inflamed around the clock. Fat cells themselves release inflammatory chemicals, increasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more.
Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals damage cells, DNA, and tissues. Colorful fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes supply the antioxidants that help the body neutralize these free radicals. As Dr. Frank says, you do not need to be a biochemist. You just need a rainbow on your plate.
Water Fasting Done Safely
Dr. Frank has supervised thousands of water fasts. He supports fasting when it is done properly and supervised, and warns strongly against the unsafe fasting challenges often seen on social media.
A safe fast includes medical evaluation, close monitoring, adequate hydration, complete rest, and a careful refeeding process. Dr. Frank offers short supervised fasts at his retreats and refers longer therapeutic fasts to TrueNorth Health Center in Santa Rosa, California.
Ultra Processed Food, Vegan Junk, And Food As Information
About sixty percent of the American diet comes from ultra processed foods. These products are not real food. They are chemically engineered to create cravings. Another large portion
of the diet consists of processed animal products. Only a small percentage includes whole fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Frank recommends starting with simple steps. Remove ultra processed foods. Make fruit your sweet treat. Eat one large salad or vegetable plate daily. Replace animal based meals with beans, lentils, and grains several times a week.
Vegan junk food also needs attention. Vegan does not automatically mean healthy. Vegan ice creams, faux meats, and processed snacks can keep people tired, inflamed, and stuck. Transitional foods have their place early on, but long term success comes from whole plant foods.
Fat Shaming, Body Pride, And Honest Conversation
Dr. Frank never shames anyone. He respects personal autonomy and encourages people to feel comfortable in their bodies. At the same time, he refuses to pretend that excess fat is harmless. Extra fat increases inflammation and disease risk.
His goal is honest, compassionate conversation that empowers people to take steps toward better health rather than avoid the topic altogether.
Ahimsa, Spirituality, And The Ethics Of Our Plate
The final section of Dr. Frank’s book explores spirituality and the principle of Ahimsa, which means doing no harm. Spirituality, in his view, is not about religion. It is about understanding how your choices affect the world around you.
What you put on your plate affects animals, land use, water systems, climate, soil, and global food distribution. Animal agriculture is a major driver of climate change and species loss. Choosing plant exclusive living becomes an act of spiritual alignment and compassion.
Food Insecurity And Why This Matters Locally
Food insecurity is not just a global concern. It is local. Plant exclusive eating can also be an affordability strategy when centered on simple staples like beans, lentils, rice, potatoes, and seasonal produce.
A lifestyle shift can help both personal health and community wellbeing.
