Dr. Carol Wroblewski, once approaching 300 pounds, has transformed her health journey into a mission to help others achieve sustainable wellness. As a guest on Plant Based Eating for Health podcast, hosted by Kathleen Gage, Dr. Wroblewski shares her inspiring shift from battling personal health struggles to guiding others through the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of how compassionate choices can lead to lasting health and resilience.
From Personal Challenge to Plant-Based Lifestyle
Dr. Wroblewski’s journey toward health began in 2005, during a time of personal struggle. Her weight had reached nearly 300 pounds, and her doctor warned her that serious health complications would follow unless she made a change. Faced with this turning point, Dr. Wroblewski committed to losing weight naturally and sustainably. She first focused on removing sugar and limiting her meals to three structured, balanced servings each day. This approach helped her gradually release over 100 pounds—a weight loss she has maintained for nearly two decades.
Navigating Bariatric Care with a Plant-Based Perspective
With years of experience counseling patients before and after bariatric surgery, Dr. Wroblewski has become a trusted resource in the field. Rather than undergoing surgery herself, she focused on addressing the emotional and mental aspects of weight loss with her patients. Her expertise helps individuals understand that true, lasting change often requires mental shifts alongside physical efforts. She also highlights the importance of sustainable, plant-based eating as a healthier alternative to processed foods and quick fixes.
The Influence of Plant-Based Literature on Her Path
An avid learner, Dr. Wroblewski credits her full commitment to plant-based eating to books that opened her eyes to the health impacts of diet. While on a cruise, she read The China Study and How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. These influential books solidified her decision to eliminate animal products from her diet. She has since attended numerous plant-based conferences and trainings, including the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) events, to deepen her understanding and advocacy.
A Psychologist’s Perspective on Food and Mental Health
As a psychologist, Dr. Wroblewski uniquely explores how diet impacts mental health, particularly for those dealing with addiction and emotional eating. She observed firsthand the profound influence of food on mood and well-being, and she advocates for using diet as a foundation for mental and emotional health. Her insights underscore the importance of nourishing both the mind and body, especially for those on weight-loss journeys.
Creating a Safe Space for Support and Education
Dr. Wroblewski now facilitates three support groups for people navigating the complexities of weight loss and long-term health. These groups offer a non-judgmental environment for individuals considering a plant-based lifestyle. Many in her community feel hesitant to adopt fully plant-based diets, but Dr. Wroblewski emphasizes gradual, manageable changes that build toward lasting health.
Finding Strength in Community and Resilience
In this episode, Kathleen Gage and Dr. Wroblewski explore the parallels between recovery from food addiction and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Both women share their experiences with overcoming personal struggles through supportive communities and emphasize the value of resilience. Dr. Wroblewski’s message resonates with listeners as she describes the power of support, motivation, and perseverance in achieving health.
Simple, Sustainable Advice for a Plant-Based Lifestyle
Dr. Wroblewski emphasizes simplicity for those starting a plant-based lifestyle. She encourages newcomers to focus on whole foods and simple meals, such as oatmeal with berries or rice and beans. By focusing on unprocessed foods, people can create sustainable habits without relying on expensive or complicated recipes. This practical approach makes plant-based living accessible, even for those new to the lifestyle.
