Answer me this… why is it when someone opts-in for a report, ezine, eBook, teleseminar or whatever it is that is offered from a website, blog or landing page there are some subscribers that think it is okay to begin sending their information to the person they requested the information from?
It is likely that many of us who provide lots of opportunities for people to opt in for something get unwanted and “not asked for” information sent to us or worse yet, someone subscribes us to their list without our permission.
You know what? It is not okay to do this. It is spam and you are likely losing more readers than you will get. And you might even be breaking a law or two.
Do not think that just because you subscribe to someone’s information they will be interested in yours? Not necessarily so.
Why not set your systems up to attract readers who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer?
To succeed in any type of business it is essential to be very clear on who does and does not want your products and services.
So the next time you think it is okay to put someone on your mailing list without their permission, don’t. It’s not okay.

Kathleen I could not agree more- Its just a different way of telemarketing – and they always seem to call most around Dinner!
A well needed post!

Boy, is that ever unacceptable. Some people have a lot of gaul.

I get that all the time – not so much people adding me to their lists… but adding me to their address book so my emails get through the spam filters.
But then when they go to send/forward a great new email to all their friends, I get that as well.
I see this as both a blessing and a curse. The curse of course is extra emails (which I can delete / filter).
The blessing is that if anybody on the cc list looks and sees my email address, they may be interested in the topic of my website and look further. So it’s free referral-based advertising.
One thing I’ve done to help reduce this is put an auto-reply on any of my non-primary lists. I have probably a dozen or so different lists… and only two of them actually get through to me. The rest refer people to my support desk or testimonial gathering page.
Thanks for your comments Chris. Actually, one thing I don’t like is when a message goes to dozens of people with all addresses showing. Again, this opens everyone on that list to spam mail.
No matter how you slice it, spamming or sending unwanted email is not the best idea or business practice.
