Do you have podcasts you’re eager to appear on as a featured expert? I know I’ve had plenty. There have been shows I loved listening to, where I just knew I’d be a great fit for the format, audience, and host. But knowing how many pitches podcast hosts receive, I understood that being strategic—and patient—was key to standing out.

One of the most effective strategies I’ve used is connecting with hosts on social media. However, this doesn’t mean sending a friend request and immediately pitching myself. Far from it.

Connecting the right way requires a long-term approach and a genuine interest in their work.

Building relationships with podcast hosts through social media is a powerful way to show your support, demonstrate your expertise, and increase your chances of landing an interview. That said, it’s important to find the balance between being authentic and avoiding behaviors that might come across as intrusive or pushy.

When approached thoughtfully, connecting with hosts can open doors to opportunities and meaningful collaborations.

Why Follow Hosts on Social Media?

Podcast hosts are often active on platforms like LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), or Instagram, where they share updates, promote episodes, and engage with their audience. Following them offers several benefits:

  1. Insight Into Their Style and Interests: Understand their tone, values, and audience by observing their posts.
  2. Opportunities to Engage: Thoughtful comments or shares can help you stand out as a genuine supporter.
  3. Foundation for Future Outreach: Establishing a connection before pitching increases the likelihood of a positive response.
How to Follow and Engage Authentically

1. Start with Observation

Before interacting, spend some time reviewing their posts. Get a sense of their content and engagement style. This will help you craft thoughtful responses rather than generic ones.

2. Engage Meaningfully

When you start engaging, make sure your comments or reactions are relevant and add value. Avoid spamming them with likes on every post.

Example:
If they post about a recent episode, you might comment, “I really enjoyed your episode with [Guest Name]. The insights about [specific topic] were incredibly helpful!”

3. Share Their Content

Sharing their posts, episodes, or insights (with credit) can demonstrate your genuine support. Add your thoughts when sharing to provide extra value.

Example:
“Loved this discussion on [topic]! [Host’s Name] always delivers such valuable content. Highly recommend this episode.”

4. Respect Their Boundaries

Don’t bombard them with messages or excessive tagging. Keep interactions professional and respectful.

5. Connect on the Right Platform

If their focus is professional, LinkedIn may be the best option. For more casual engagement, Instagram or X could be appropriate.

What to Avoid
  • Over-Engaging: Excessive comments, likes, or tags can come across as desperate or annoying.
  • Generic Messaging: “Great post!” isn’t enough. Be specific in your interactions.
  • Premature Pitches: Avoid jumping into a direct message with your pitch right away. Build rapport first.
Why This Matters

Authentic engagement shows that you’re genuinely interested in the host’s work, not just seeking a platform for self-promotion. When done correctly, it positions you as someone who values their content and their audience.

Building connections with podcast hosts through social media is about creating mutual respect and trust. By engaging authentically, you lay the groundwork for a successful pitch that feels natural and welcomed.

Day 13 Exercise: Build Authentic Connections on Social Media

For today’s exercise, take your list of five podcast hosts you want to reach out to (Day 12 Exercise) and start building connections with them on social media. Here’s what to do:

  1. Find Them on Social Media
Locate the hosts on platforms like LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), or Instagram.
  2. Engage Authentically
  • Send a polite and personalized invitation to connect.
  • Comment thoughtfully on one of their posts. Mention what you enjoyed or found valuable.
  • Create a post where you highlight one of their shows, tagging them and sharing your insights about the episode.

The goal is to show genuine interest and begin a meaningful relationship that sets the stage for future collaboration. This step is not about pitching yourself immediately—it’s about creating trust and rapport.

Let me know how your outreach goes!

Tomorrow, on Day 14, we’ll focus on the importance of Personalizing Each Pitch. You’ll learn how to tailor your pitch for the first five podcasts on your list by referencing specific episodes, themes, or values that align with the show. This approach will help you stand out and make a lasting impression on podcast hosts.
