Many people will embark on a life-changing process without the support of others.

Not that this is a bad thing, but often, left to our own devices, there is only so far we can get.

Hiring a coach can mean the difference between so/so changes and long-lasting change. The right coach knows how to take us to places we never thought possible.

Types of Coaches

I’m writing this post knowing this morning I will be meeting up with my weight training coach. Although I’ve weight trained off and on for decades, since hiring Kristian I’ve had some of my greatest shifts.

It’s the same in business. I’ve owned my current business for nearly a quarter century. In that time, I’ve hired some amazing coaches and mentors. Men and woman who taught me things about my business, and more importantly, about myself.

We can hire a coach for just about anything.

  • Health
  • Nutrition
  • Business
  • Life
  • Relationship
  • Writing
  • Performance
  • Acting
  • Speaking
  • Executive

You name it, there’s likely a coach you can hire.

Do Your Homework

However, before jumping into a coaching situation do your homework. Make sure you are investing wisely. Don’t take a coach’s word for it that they are as good as they say they are. Talk to clients they have worked with. Ask the tough questions. Put time in upfront in order to have realistic expectations.

The business coaches I’ve hired have proven track records. Each has an area they were very strong in that I wanted to grow in.

I’ve hired business coaches to work with me on mindset, strategies, business growth, event development, speaking and writing.

It’s the same with Kristian, my weight training coach. Although I have no intention of competing, Kristian is recognized for his ability to produce champion bodybuilders. I want to tap into that kind of knowledge and am willing to pay for it.

Guiding vs Doing

One thing about a coach is this; they are there to guide you, not do the work for you.

Kristian can’t lift the weights for me. He can simply guide me in the right way to do lift and push me further than I would do on my own.

When I’ve worked with business coaches, they can’t do the work for me. They can simply guide me in the direction I need to go.

When a coach advises you on what needs to be done, YOU are responsible for doing the work. If you do the work, you’ll likely get results. If you don’t do what they recommend, don’t blame the coach. It’s on you as to how much you take their words to heart.

Your success or failure resides with the person you see looking back at you in the mirror.
