On a recent visit to the grocery store, I noticed a sharp increase in prices. And that was before the new tariffs scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2025. If you’re feeling the financial squeeze, you’re not imagining it.
Across social media, especially TikTok, people are posting videos about how little they can buy for several hundred dollars. You’ll see grocery hauls that include just a few bags of food for well over a hundred dollars. The common thread? Most of these purchases include processed, prepackaged, or convenience foods. While many people value the freedom to buy what they want, the more ultra-processed foods in the cart, the higher the bill at checkout.
There’s no denying that convenience is appealing. But the tradeoff often means higher prices, lower nutrition, and more packaging waste. Many families rarely enjoy a truly home-cooked meal. Instead, they reach for frozen pizzas, boxed meals, or quick drive-thru solutions. The result is more money spent and less control over ingredients.
If your grocery bill feels out of control, the good news is you can take back control. It starts with small, intentional choices.
7 Ways to Lower Your Grocery Bill and Eat Better
• Shop in the bulk section for staples like rice, lentils, oats, and pasta
• Focus on whole food, plant-based ingredients
• Skip the heavily processed vegan substitutes
• Cook from scratch whenever possible
• Plan meals for the week ahead
• Batch cook and freeze extra portions
• Use what you already have in your pantry before buying more
These small steps can add up to big savings and better health.
Take tonight’s dinner as an example. I made a fully home-cooked, plant-based meal for myself and my spouse. We
had spaghetti made with rice pasta, paired with a fresh bean salad. The sauce was left over from a large batch I cooked last week. The pasta cost about two dollars. The beans were about one dollar. Altogether, the cost of our dinner was eight dollars, or just four dollars per person.
The prep time tonight was minimal because I planned ahead. I didn’t need to open a box or rely on something frozen. It was a real, nourishing meal that didn’t break the bank. These are the kinds of meals we need more of.
Cooking at home doesn’t have to be time-consuming or complicated. It just takes a little planning and a willingness to get back to basics.
