Have you ever noticed a glaring inconsistency about a situation that you knew you had to bring the light of day to? Such is the case with a contest hosted by Leopold’s Ice Cream.
If ever there is a disconnect, this is it. The contest invites children to write a poem about this year’s theme – kindness.
On the surface, this appears to be incredibly positive. After all, the contest encourages young people to put on their creative hats, showcase their writing skills and in return, Leopold’s Ice Cream rewards their efforts.
Yet, when the curtain is pulled back on what goes into the production of ice cream, there is a reality lurking that is not at all about kindness, but rather, cruelty in ways that are almost unspeakable.
“Cows in the dairy industry suffer their entire lives. From the moment they enter this world they are treated like commodities. Special bonds are routinely broken, and cows often develop painful medical conditions.” The Truth About The Dairy Industry (animalequality.org)
The Cruel Reality
The thought of what happens to the cows to get the milk to create the ice cream is the epitome of cruelty and yet, through a promotional campaign to encourage children to contribute their poems, while enjoying ice cream, they are inadvertently, and deceitfully, asked to contribute to the cruel treatment of cows.
There are so many ways that the torture and cruelty animals receive is hidden. Hosting a contest to where children write about kindness is a great example.

What are your thoughts on this type of contest that promotes one thing, yet supports the complete opposite by virtue of the fact animals are not treated with kindness by virtue of the fact of how dairy products are produced?
