Many people live in the illusion of “someday.” You may think that you will start your own business, “someday”. But when someday actually comes, you find that you end up working more for less money, and you end up wanting something more – but you don’t know how to get it. You didn’t accomplish what you set out to do.
The “someday” illusion shows up in many ways. You believe, for example, that if you get the promotion things will be better – but then you find out that it’s actually more difficult than you thought it would be to manage others.
My friend Marlene Chism reinvented her life ten years ago when she left a 20 year job in manufacturing to pursue her dream. Many of you know the story of going from line worker to professional.
Factory work is mundane. You always work by the same people and you are always told what to do. You rotate every 30 minutes and you don’t have to think too much once you’ve been trained. Marlene kept thinking about the transition she wanted to make and and she began to realize that, given the circumstances, her expectations may have been a bit unrealistic.
She thought, “If you can believe it, you can achieve it.”
But those first few years, she was scared. Her expectations were too high. There were many real skills that she still needed to learn. As a result, she was miserable during those first few years because she wasn’t reaching her goals as quickly as she had imagined.
