My friend made a decent chunk of change by selling his ebooks on the Kindle marketplace for just $0.99. He didn’t get rich but he sure made a lot more money than I thought was possible when selling such low-priced items.
There are some people who say they would never sell their ebooks for 99 cents. Personally, if I can get lots of readers to know my work and I feel good about the transaction, I’m all for it.
I totally agree – I wouldn’t feel right selling any kind of book for $0.99. But his strategy had something to do with Amazon’s payout margin and the price point. I think his entire thing was: More people will buy if you price your ebook to the 99cent mark. Worked for him, but that certainly isn’t for everyone.
In fact, he has now moved onto long-format hardcopy novels. The pressure of having to monitor sales/payouts/margins got a bit too much, though it certainly got his work out there.
