Podcast interviews are one of the most powerful ways to gain visibility, build authority, and create meaningful connections. But here is the thing: how you show up in those first few moments can make or break the experience for both you and the host.
Recently, I was producing an episode for a show I work closely with. The host is gracious, has several episodes under her belt, and known for going deep with her guests. She often reads the full book of a guest prior to the show, does extensive research on her guests, and takes a lot of interest in what they will share.
But this time, things did not unfold quite so smoothly. The guest showed up exactly at the scheduled start time. No buffer. No prep. Just boom. Here we go.
“Oh sorry, I need to shut the door behind me,” she said, clearly flustered.
“No worries. Go ahead,” I responded, giving her space.
When she returned, she kept glancing off camera, obviously distracted. I asked gently, “Is now a good time for you? If you have something going on, we can reschedule.” I meant it. I was not trying to shame her. I just wanted to give her a chance to reset.
With a tone that felt more annoyed than appreciative, she replied, “No, I’m good.”
But here is the truth: she was not good. She seemed disinterested. Bored, even. And for someone who had received multiple reminders leading up to the interview, that left a mark.
Despite the rocky start, the episode turned out fine. Not great. Just fine. Which was telling, because this particular host often extends interviews well past the one-hour mark when the conversation is rich. This one wrapped in just over 20 minutes.
It was not because the host lacked interest or skill. It was because the guest did not bring herself fully to the moment. And that matters.
First Impressions Stick, Even on Zoom
When you are invited to be a guest on someone’s podcast, you are being given a platform. That host has built an audience, nurtured a community, and now they are sharing that space with you. Show up like it matters, because it does.
As one of my mentors wisely said, “How you do anything is how you do everything.”
If you come in scattered, distracted, and unprepared, that impression lingers. It also closes doors you may never know existed. Podcast hosts often know other hosts, and when they love a guest, they make introductions. I can tell you with certainty, that will not be happening in this case.
What the Guest Should Have Done
Yes, I am “shoulding” here, and for good reason. Because if you want to leverage podcasting as a visibility tool, this matters. Here is what the guest could have done differently:
-
Log on early. Give yourself 5 to 10 minutes to check your lighting, audio, and background. It also shows the host you are ready and respectful of their time.
-
Clear your space and your mind. Shut the door before the call starts. Close all tabs. Silence your phone. This is not the time to multitask.
-
Be present. You do not need to be “on” in a fake way, but you do need to be engaged. Look at the host, listen deeply, and respond with intention.
-
Remember why you said yes. If this feels like a chore, you are doing something wrong. Reconnect with your message, your story, and your audience. That is what you are really showing up for.
-
Bring your best energy. You do not need to be bouncing off the walls, but enthusiasm and warmth go a long way. People can feel your energy through the screen.
The Bigger Picture
Life happens. Kids interrupt. Pets bark. Tech glitches. We have all been there. But what is not okay is treating a podcast interview like a last-minute obligation you did not want to commit to in the first place.
Respect the platform. Respect the host. And most importantly, respect yourself and the message you are there to share.
If you want to be remembered, referred, and rebooked, show up like a professional.
Because how you do anything is how you do everything.
