Over 30 years ago, when I dreamed of being a professional speaker, I was asked, “What do you speak on?” Excitedly, I created a list of over 50 topics. When I handed the piece of paper to my mentor, the look of shock on her face was unforgettable. She smiled, slid it back to me very slowly across the table and said, “I want you to select just three topics from this list.”

“But why?” I asked. “Won’t I be limiting my opportunities by narrowing it down to only three?”

“Actually, no,” she replied. “You’ll be viewed as more of an authority.”

She was right. Narrowing my focus was harder than I thought, but over time, I realized that just because I can speak on a topic doesn’t mean I should. The same principle applies to podcast guesting.

If your topics are too general or scattered, it’s difficult for podcast hosts to see you as an expert in any one area. But by focusing on 2-3 signature topics, you’ll position yourself as a specialist who brings real value to both hosts and listeners.

Why Signature Topics Matter

Your signature topics are the foundation of your podcast guesting strategy. They:

  • Focus Your Message: Consistency across podcasts helps solidify your authority in your niche.
  • Align with Hosts: Tailored topics demonstrate your ability to provide value to the host and their audience.
  • Engage Audiences: Listeners will remember you for your depth of insight and actionable advice.

Being narrow and deep in your offerings isn’t a limitation—it’s a strategy for establishing expertise and building trust.

How to Develop Your Signature Topics

1. Reflect on Your Expertise
What topics do you know deeply and feel passionate about? Think about the insights and strategies you can confidently share.

Example: A vegan entrepreneur might focus on “Building a Sustainable Business,” “Ethical Marketing Strategies,” and “The Impact of Plant-Based Living on Leadership.”

2. Align with Your Brand
Your topics should support your personal or professional brand. They need to tie back to your goals, such as growing your influence or promoting your offerings.

Example: A health coach who specializes in plant-based nutrition could focus on “Preventing Chronic Illness with Whole Foods” or “Plant-Based Diets for Busy Professionals.”

3. Match Podcast Themes
Research podcasts in your niche and align your topics with their themes. Think about what would make your expertise relevant and valuable to their audience.

Example: For a podcast focused on wellness, you might speak about “The Role of Plant-Based Eating in Stress Reduction.”

4. Address Audience Needs
Think about the challenges the podcast’s audience faces and how your topics can provide solutions.

Example: A speaker addressing entrepreneurs might discuss “Balancing Health and Business Success.”

5. Test Your Topics
Try your topics out in pitches, social media posts, or conversations to see which ones generate the most interest and engagement.

What Makes a Great Signature Topic?

A strong signature topic:

  • Solves a Problem: Addresses a challenge the audience is eager to overcome.
  • Tells a Story: Incorporates personal experiences or examples that resonate.
  • Offers Value: Provides actionable takeaways or thought-provoking insights.
  • Highlights Your Expertise: Reinforces why you’re the go-to person for this topic.
Practical Example: My Signature Topics

Through my experience, I’ve developed signature topics that align with my brand and consistently engage podcast audiences:

“How Plant-Based Eating Improves Business Performance”: A unique perspective on how nutrition fuels professional success.
“Breaking Norms: Lessons from 40 Years of Advocacy and Entrepreneurship”: Stories and strategies from my journey.
“Vegan Visibility: Strategies for Growing Your Influence in a Compassionate Industry”: Practical tips for ethical branding and outreach.

These topics are narrow enough to showcase my expertise but broad enough to adapt to different podcast formats.

What’s Next?

Now that you’ve developed your signature topics, it’s time to prepare how you’ll present yourself. On Day 7, we’ll focus on Creating a Compelling Bio—a short but impactful introduction that highlights your expertise, achievements, and personality. This will be the foundation of your podcast pitch and the first impression you make on hosts and their audiences.

Remember, by narrowing your focus to 2-3 topics, you’ll not only increase your chances of getting booked but also deliver interviews that leave a lasting impact. Let’s keep building!
