I’m amused, at best, when I hear someone say, “I’m going to visualize what I want and then wait for it to appear.”
Visualization, in and of itself, will not create the outcomes you desire. Sure, there are times you can think your way into a successful outcome, but 99% of the time, you must have action behind the thought.
In a few weeks I am participating in my first ever sprint triathlon. Over the last few months I’ve enhanced my exercise and training protocol to include biking and swimming to my running regime. I also do resistance training.
If all I was to do is think about the outcome, visualize the outcome and not take action on the outcome, there are a few things that will (or will not) happen.

  1. I won’t achieve my outcome
  2. I may injure myself the day of the tri
  3. I will give up on my goal

Am I saying visualization doesn’t work? Not at all. What I’m saying is that with the visualization you absolutely must have action.
To achieve an outcome in virtually anything, you must be willing to do the footwork. To not do so is setting yourself up for frustration.

Formula for success

  • Visualize what you want
  • Take daily action
  • Evaluate
  • Adjust as needed
  • Keep at it
