What Makes You Stand Out as a Podcast Guest

It’s amazing that, for many people, being told to “behave yourself” was once a defining message. Don’t rock the boat. Don’t stand out.

Yet today, the very qualities that make you different—your boldness, unique voice, and distinct perspective—are exactly what podcast hosts are looking for in their guests. They don’t just want people who fit in; they want people who stand out.

If you’ve been following along with the 30-Day Podcast Guesting Plan, you’ve already set the stage for success:

  1. Day 1: Define Your Podcast Goals – Clarify why you want to guest on podcasts, whether it’s for visibility, advocacy, or lead generation.
  2. Day 2: Clarify Your Target Audience – Identify who you want to reach and what matters most to them.
  3. Day 3: Research Top Podcasts in Your Niche – Create a list of podcasts that align with your expertise and audience.
  4. Day 4: Study Podcast Episodes and Hosts – Understand their format, tone, and audience to tailor your pitch effectively.

Now it’s time to uncover and celebrate what makes you the perfect guest for those shows: Your Unique Selling Points (USPs).

What Are USPs and Why Do They Matter?

Your USPs are the key insights, personal stories, or areas of expertise that set you apart from other guests. They answer the critical question every host considers:

“Why should I feature you on my show?”

Hosts are inundated with pitches, many of which are generic and fail to connect with the podcast’s unique mission or audience. A well-defined USP will:

  • Capture the Host’s Attention: Highlight what makes you compelling.
  • Engage the Audience: Share stories and insights that create lasting impact.
  • Establish Credibility: Position yourself as a trusted voice and thought leader.
How to Identify Your Unique Selling Points
1. Highlight Your Expertise

Think about the skills, knowledge, or perspectives you bring to the table.

  • Example: A vegan chef might specialize in creating kid-friendly plant-based recipes.
2. Leverage Personal Stories

Your journey is one of your greatest assets. Authentic stories build emotional connections with listeners.

  • Example: A wellness advocate might share how they reversed chronic illness through plant-based living.
3. Showcase Your Achievements

Accomplishments add credibility and set you apart. Whether it’s awards, media features, or client success stories, don’t hesitate to share your wins.

4. Offer a Fresh Perspective

Even commonly discussed topics can feel new when presented from a unique angle.

  • Example: A fitness coach might share how weightlifting builds both strength and confidence for women.
5. Address Audience Needs

Think about the problems you can solve or the aspirations you can help the audience achieve.

A Real-World Example of USPs in Action

Recently, I was featured on the No-Bullsh!t Vegan podcast hosted by Karina Inkster. Growing up, I was taught not to “rock the boat,” yet Karina’s bold, unapologetic messaging focuses on women breaking the rules and lifting heavy sh*t!

It was her branding that first caught my attention. I thought, “Wow! I love that. I definitely want to be on her show.” As someone who started weightlifting nearly 40 years ago—when it wasn’t common for women—I could instantly relate to her message.

My USPs aligned perfectly with Karina’s audience and mission:

  • Expertise: My work as a vegan entrepreneur and advocate.
  • Personal Story: My journey of breaking norms and embracing strength, both physical and metaphorical.
  • Bold Perspective: Challenging traditional expectations of women while promoting plant-based living.

The result was an authentic, engaging conversation that resonated with listeners and allowed me to share my message in a meaningful way.

Check it out.

Putting Your USPs Into Action

Once you’ve identified your USPs, use them to enhance every stage of your podcast guesting strategy:

  • Pitching: Highlight your most compelling USP in your outreach to grab the host’s attention.
  • Prepare Talking Points: Frame your talking points around your USPs to create a strong narrative.
  • Call-to-Action (CTA): Direct listeners to explore your unique offerings, whether it’s a resource, service, or personal story.
What’s Next?

With your USPs clearly defined, the next step is to turn them into actionable talking points. On Day 6, we’ll focus on Developing Your Signature Topics—choosing 2-3 key themes you can confidently discuss that align with your brand and the podcasts’ missions. These topics will help you stay consistent, engage listeners, and ensure every interview leaves a lasting impact. Stay tuned!
